    SOME THINGS TO KNOW:FAQ’S

    INGREDIENT TIP:

    • Granny Smith Apples are tart apples considered to be some of the best apples for pie. Read The Best Apples for Apple Pie to find some other kinds of apples to use in your apple pie filling. There are some sweeter apple options like Honeycrisp apples and Golden Delicious apples.
    • Having the butter cold is a key element to a successful crumble topping. Keep the butter refrigerated until you are ready to cut it in to the crumble ingredients.

    SPECIAL EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

    • 9″ pie dish
    • Apple corer
    • Apple peeler
    • Large Bowl
    • Food processor or pastry cutter.

    SUBSTITUTIONS:

    • If you’re short on time or prefer a convenient option, you can use a pre-made, store-bought pie crust instead of a homemade crust. For a different twist, you can use a graham cracker crust. It adds a sweet and slightly nutty flavor that complements the apple filling well.
    • Instead of granulated sugar in the apple filling, you can use brown sugar for a richer, caramel-like flavor. You could also substitute some of the sugar with pure maple syrup, which adds a natural sweetness and depth of flavor.
    • Instead of ground cinnamon, ginger and mace, you can use allspice for a warm and slightly peppery flavor. You could also experiment with cardamom for a unique, aromatic twist on the traditional spices.

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER APPLE CRUMBLE PIE:

    • If you plan to consume the pie within 1-2 days, you can store it at room temperature. Cover the pie with plastic wrap.
    • For longer storage, it’s best to refrigerate the apple crumble pie. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days in the fridge.
    • You can freeze the pie for up to 3 months.Allow the pie to cool completely at room temperature before freezing. This helps prevent condensation inside the packaging.Wrap the entire pie or individual slices in several layers of plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Make sure there are no exposed areas to prevent freezer burn. You can also use an airtight container.
    • Defrost the pie at room temperature.

HOW TO REHEAT APPLE CRUMBLE PIE:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the pie on a baking sheet and cover it loosely with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the pie is heated through and the filling is bubbling.Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes to allow the crumble topping to crisp up.
    • You can reheat individual slices in the microwave on a microwave-safe plate.Microwave on medium power in 30-second intervals, checking after each interval. Be cautious not to overheat, as it can make the crust soggy.

Serves: 8 servings Prep Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 45 minutes

    Ingredients

    • PIE:
    • 10 medium apples
    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
    • ½ cup sugar
    • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
    • 1 pie crust, prepared or homemade pie crust
    • TOPPING:
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    • ½ teaspoon mace (optional)
    • 1 stick butter, cold and cut into tablespoons

    Instructions

Preheat your oven temperature  to 375 degrees.

    PIE:

Place the lemon juice into a large bowl. Peel, core and slice the apples 1 inch thick. Add the sliced apples to the bowl with the lemon juice as you are slicing them and stir them. This will prevent the apples from browning.

Add the sugar, flour and cinnamon to the apple slices. Mix the apple mixture completely.

Line a 9 inch pie plate with the bottom crust, crimping the edges. You can buy a prepared crust or try Fool Proof Pie Dough.

Add the apples to the pie shell. Place them so that the apples in the center of the plate come up slightly higher.

    CRUMB TOPPING:

Mix the flour, sugar ,cinnamon, ginger and mace together. In either a food processor or in a large bowl using a pastry blender, add the cold butter, one tablespoon at a time. The butter needs to be completely cut into the dry ingredients so that you achieve a very crumbly mixture.

Spread the crumbs evenly over the apples in the pie plate, making sure that all of the apples are completely covered.

Bake the pie for 45 minutes in the center rack of the oven. Check the pie at 20 minutes as the edges may brown before the rest of the pie. If you see that happening, cut a strip of aluminum foil and place it around the rim of the pie, covering the edge of the crust. This will prevent it from becoming too brown. Check out this tutorial on how to make a pie crust ring if you want to do this.

Serve the pie at room temperature or warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
